You've made up your mind, today is the day to tackle your to-do list.

But you quickly realize that your toolbox only consists of a multi-head screwdriver in the bottom of a drawer. And that's without taking into account the painful memory of your last attempt at renovation that comes back to haunt you… poor door, she didn't do anything wrong to you… her!

Not to be discouraged, you have a genius idea: hire a handyman in your Gatineau neighborhood.

Installed in front of your computer, you type " handyman » in a search engine and “BAM” they are all there… you are really too strong. But how can you be sure to choose “THE” professional for your work who will be available, competent, punctual, at a reasonable price and offering a guarantee on his work?

Here are the 5 golden rules to follow when it comes time to choose your handyman.

New in Gatineau

Finally a first brother-in-law for rent in Gatineau, opt for 10% applicable on your first request for services. AYLMER - BUCKINGHAM - GATINEAU - HULL - MASSON - ANGERS

Do they have references that you can (read “must”) check?

Anyone with a hammer in their hand can appear to be a jack of all trades. So, I suggest you be very vigilant and forget about classified ads on Kijiji or MarketPlace, because you must protect your biggest investment, your house or condo. Check if he can provide you with references from satisfied customers and if he is well known in your area of Gatineau. How many years has he been in business? Does he have a website where you can see his business address and a telephone number other than his cell phone? What are his latest achievements and does he have any supporting photos?

Beware of too attractive a price

As you know, transportation costs, tools, insurance and permits add up quickly. Moreover, expertise can be monetized. So, if a handyman offers you a lower than average price, you should be on the lookout. Too often, I have seen jobs abandoned by people hired who did not have the required skills, or because they found a better paying opportunity with another client.

Is it in law and well protected?

Be aware that the popular belief that small jobs are unregulated is completely false. Handymen must obey the same laws as other renovation companies. They must have a permit from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ).

They must also hold liability insurance that protects you in the event of a problem. By simply asking for their RBQ number (which you can easily check on the Régie du bâtiment du Québec website), you will be able to easily rule out weekend "bizounous" who do not do this job seriously.

We never pay everything in advance and we require guarantees

The best guarantee that you will obtain satisfaction until the end is not to pay for the work in advance. I suggest, at the beginning of the project, that only the materials be reimbursed. Then 50% of the workforceartwork payable at mid-term and finally the other 50% at the end of the work, when you have approved the work. Stand firm, they will demand other conditions with very good explanations, but YOU are the boss and it is YOUR money.

A jack of all trades cannot and should not do everything. A good handyman is a generalist

So, if your handyman tells you he can do anything, no matter how big the job, take to your heels, because trouble will come quickly. Among other things, electrical and plumbing work, but also large-scale work such as the roof, the replacement of several windows… so be very careful.

Now you can relax...

The best part of all this is that, in addition to having saved time by obtaining the services of a competent handyman who offers guarantees, if you have done your research well and that despite everything, you are not fully satisfied, you will be able to demand better from him. This should allow you, in the end, to obtain services that meet your expectations.

The success story of the computer scientist who became a "Brother-in-law for rent" franchise

Without any past experience as a renovation contractor, this 37-year-old computer scientist chose to launch a “Brother-in-law for rent” franchise. For what? Because he aspired to a career that would allow him to be in contact with people and to realize his passion for renovation. Let's discover the story of Pierre Leclerc, the owner of the first “Beau-frère à hiring” franchise in the great city of Quebec.

Become a successful franchisee too

Who is Pierre Leclerc?

Pierre Leclerc is the proud owner of the “Beau-frère à hiring – Limoilou” franchise in Quebec. At 37, despite his lack of experience in market development and client management, he created an impressive momentum, with appointments that quickly allowed him to fill his calendar for the first month in his first week in as a franchisee. With the support of the marketing team of “Beau-frere for rent”, Pierre was able to acquire his first customers and increase traffic on his website from zero to more than 500 visits in just one month of operation.

The franchise completely reinvented!

We changed the rules of the game

Why did Pierre choose "Brother-in-law for rent" to go into business for the first time?

Pierre, like many of his generation, was looking for a career that would fascinate him. His interest in renovation grew over the years, during which he renovated his own income properties. The idea of spending the rest of his career working alone in front of a computer screen did not excite him. He wanted to be useful, meet people and do a job he was passionate about. The methods, the tools, the training, but above all the experience in the field of Beau-brother for rent greatly reassured him when he decided to embark on the adventure. His talents and his passion for renovation and franchisor support greatly made up for his lack of experience.

The Fantastic 5

Find out what makes us so unique

How franchising allowed Pierre to start his business with no experience

One of the main obstacles to entrepreneurship is fear, even more so than lack of funds. The business world can be daunting, especially without prior experience. This is where franchising comes in. Iwas able to overcome his difficulties and leverage an already established brand to start his own business.

The Fantastic 5 are the basis of the concept of Brother-in-Law for Hire. Make more profit with less for a better quality of life. Sometimes it's when everything is kept simple that you have the most success in business.

  • 1 franchisee, 0 employee
  • 1 territory studied and maximized
  • 1 trucks
  • 1 100% online application for all the needs of a franchisee
  • 1 team (call center, marketing, training and support)

Why choose a franchise? The five key benefits

  1. A proven business model: A franchise is a business that has proven itself in different markets.
  2. Initial training and ongoing support: The franchisor is responsible for ensuring adequate training before the official launch of the business.
  3. Easier access to financial assistance: The high success rate and proven business model of a franchise makes getting a loan easier.
  4. An established brand: As a franchisee, you benefit from the regional and national growth of the brand.
  5. Marketing support: A franchisor will provide you with proven marketing strategies to promote the brand. • Building a business without previous experience: how this 37-year-old computer scientist became his own boss by starting a Brother-in-law franchise .

En conclusion

Pierre's story demonstrates that it is entirely possible to create a successful business without prior experience. Thanks to the franchise, Pierre was able to turn his passion for renovation into a viable and profitable business. Pierre's experience with Beau-Frere for Rent illustrates the benefits of franchising for those looking to start their own business, but may be intimidated by a lack of business experience or knowledge.

3-Control your home

Another way to keep the cold out of your home is to weather strip. Tufting helps keep wind out of your home and is a quick and easy way to improve your home's energy efficiency.

Make a list of all the tasks that need to be done.

This will help you stay organized and make sure you don't miss anything important.

2-Create a calendar

Create a schedule for yourself and try to stick to it as closely as possible. That way, you'll be able to get your house ready on time and avoid any last-minute rush.

3-Divide tasks into categories

Divide the tasks into categories (exterior, interior, etc.) and work on them one at a time. This will help you stay focused and efficient.

4-Ask for help if necessary

Use this article of course, but you should ask for help from family members, friends and specialists with the right tools if necessary. This can make the job easier and more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Ultimately, your plan should save you time to relax and enjoy your work!

Why does it pay for a homeowner to follow a winter maintenance plan?

It pays for a homeowner to follow a winter maintenance plan for several reasons.

Winter is a tough season for homeowners. Not only do you have to worry about the cold, but you also have to worry about protecting your home from damage. By following a winter maintenance plan, you can protect your home while keeping it warm and comfortable.

Here are some of the reasons why it is beneficial for a homeowner to follow a winter maintenance plan:

1-Protect your home from the cold

If you take the time to properly insulate and caulk your home, you can keep the cold out and save money on your energy bills.

2-Prevent damage to your home

The cold can cause a lot of damage to your home, like cracking windows, rotting wood and bursting pipes. By properly preparing your home for the winter season, you can avoid most of this damage.

3-Maintain the value of your home

A well-maintained home is more valuable than an untidy one. By following a winter maintenance plan, you will help protect the value of your home.

Who can help you as an owner to properly follow your winter maintenance plan?

Everyone in the family can have fun while lending a hand. But, if you want additional support, there are plenty of organizations and companies that will help you inspect and maintain your home.

Home improvement stores, for example, sell a variety of products that can be used for repairs. In addition, many cities and towns offer tasks such as insulating your home and caulking doors and windows.

Finally, there are a number of private companies that offer specialized services like caulking your doors and windows and more general companies that offer handyman services for your more manual tasks.

Often, a good relationship with your handyman allows you to have access to good specialists in your neighborhood that he can refer to you.

If necessary, get an expert to diagnose the problem and make the changes.

Interior tasks:

  •  If you often see condensation on your windows, use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in your home and take steps to correct the problem.
  • Circulate air behind furniture and behind cabinets near exterior walls, especially in basements. Warm, humid areas produce mold more easily.
  • Keep the temperature of the earthen cellar around 10-15°C, and make sure that the air vents are well closed.
  • Be sure to perform a radon test in your home. Radon is a radioactive gas that can be dangerous to health. It is therefore necessary to ensure that your home is free of them. A simple test will give you peace of mind and ensure that you and your family are safe from radon exposure.
  • If the pipes are in danger of freezing, turn on a faucet and let a small trickle of water run overnight. Likewise, if the pipes are located in the back of a closet near an exterior wall, open the doors to let in ambient heat.
  • In cold or windy weather, identify areas where air could enter your home and take steps to fix the problem when the weather is nicer.
  • Clean the bathroom exhaust fan grill to remove dust and dirt.
  • Collect the ashes from the fireplace and clean the mantel.
  • Test all of the shutoff valves in your home.
  • Keeping your drawers and cabinet doors clean and snug is important to maintaining a functional household.
  • Don't forget to regularly clean the filter in your cooker hood and replace it if necessary.
  • Clean refrigerator coils, dust the back and bottom of appliances.
  • Clean your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, change their batteries if necessary and check their operation.

I wanted to write an article on the best job in Quebec for 2023, that of the handyman. And chance does things well, I have been one for more than 12 years. Does my statement surprise you? You probably say to yourself that I add more to impress the gallery. Well no, I think so and it's almost embarrassing to be so lucky to have this job. This article sheds light on a profession that is too often overlooked.

Looking for the best job in Quebec.

Like everyone in Quebec, I was looking for an interesting, fulfilling, accessible, stable and very well paid job. So I finished college and took a great job… in finance. Very far from the profession of handyman.

The franchise completely reinvented!

We changed the rules of the game

My work experience.

Hi, I'm Daniel, the founder of Beau-Frère for rent and I decided to help renovation enthusiasts like you earn a good living by becoming a contractor specializing in small and medium renovation projects, it's i.e. jack of all trades. Over 12 years ago, I decided to drop everything and go my own way to become a handyman.

You know what? I have only one regret, I should have done it long before.

So, if you have doubts about this profession, like my entourage at the time, continue reading this article. I will try to convince you that it really is the most beautiful in the world.

An important point about this profession is as much for women as for men.

I would like to point out that I am referring to the trade that here in Quebec is called “handyman” and that in France it is rather called “handyman” or “handyman”. I want to emphasize that both women and men can exercise it.

I will try to convince you by demolishing the five prejudices that we hear most often.

The 5 reasons why the profession of handyman should be avoided according to popular beliefs and let's see why it's wrong!

  1. It is a job for poorly qualified (manual) and uneducated people: False
  2. It is a profession where the working conditions are miserable: False
  3. It is a poorly paid job: False
  4. It is an unstable and precarious profession: False
  5. It is not a job to create a profitable and successful business: False

First, the stereotype that this job is for people with little education and skills.

Couldn't be further from the truth! Professional handymen are highly skilled workers who have spent years perfecting their craft, learning about new techniques, materials and tools, as they face different situations every day. Sure, some jobs may be easier than others, but being a handyman means you never stop learning.

The general practitioner of the house.

They have an increasingly important role, they occupy the role of general practitioner for the house. They diagnose and advise customers who are highly specialized in one area and completely overwhelmed by everything that involves maintenance and repairs. Often they just don't have the time or inclination to deal with it. They want to have someone they trust who will take care of their home for them.

Working conditions are poor

This is simply wrong! Handymen have the freedom to set their own hours and work the way they want. They are their own boss and can choose to work on projects and clients that interest them. In 12 years, I can count on my fingers the number of times I have worked evenings and weekends… Ask a doctor if he can say the same.

In this business, we are in direct contact with our customers. The monetary reward is obviously there, be patient, we will get there soon, but the feeling of recognition that we receive and the pleasure of seeing in the faces of our customers that we make a real difference in their lives. That, few professions allow you to experience it every day.

This brings us to the stereotype that the handyman does not earn a good salary.

This time, it's more nuanced, in theory it's completely false, but unfortunately in practice we see it too often.

In theory (which I think should be the norm)

Good handymen know how to stand out, build a stable clientele, know how to choose their clients and the work they accept to do. The handymen who know how to do it make income that could make a lot of professionals blush.

If you stand out for the quality of your services, you will quickly become indispensable to your customers and you will be able to charge what you are really worth.

A good handyman often earns much more than many prestigious jobs requiring long studies.

In practice now, why do most handymen and home improvement contractors fail after just 3 years in business?

The all-purpose hamster wheel

The reason is simple and I call it “The All-Purpose Hamster Wheel”. And I'm not smarter than the others, I spent my early years there too.

Here is what this wheel consists of.

Imagine a guy full of good will, and with heart in his stomach, we'll call him “Daniel” it's really a coincidence if he has the same first name as me.

  1. Daniel knows he has the talent, the tools and the passion for renovation. But since his name is not really recognized in the market, except for his family and his group of friends, he thinks that to achieve a good reputation, it is normal to agree to negotiate on the price, to accept jobs that he does not really like and to go around town for new customers.
  2. As he has agreed to make good prices and works on what others are fleeing, he is super happy to see his agenda quickly filled for the first few weeks.
  3. But since he has compromised on the price and on his time, he is working like a madman to finish quickly and cash the first checks. Because, his cash is starting to become scarce with the purchases of materials for his new demands and the loss of his regular income that he left behind a few weeks ago.
  4. As he works like a madman, he therefore no longer has time to find and choose new requests that could be more profitable.
  5. After some time, Daniel inevitably finds himself faced with an empty agenda.
  6. And guess what? To remedy all this quickly, they accept at a discount new requests or requests that no one wanted… to “make a name for themselves” and “invest in the future”.

And there you see me coming, the wheel begins a second round... and a third round... and one day Daniel, this all-purpose hamster, came close to quitting the job as many have done before him and as many will still do. after him. By the way, I won't go into detail today, but I hope I can tell you how our handy hamster was finally able to get off its wheel.

This all-purpose hamster wheel is well known and a host of solutions are available to avoid it or at least get out of it as quickly as possible. It is certain that I will address the subject quickly in a future article if you are interested. But I can tell you right away that it is as a team that we can achieve this. You can't wear all hats.

So as not to leave you in an unbearable suspense, here are 5 ways to get out of this infernal spiral:

  1. Learn to delegate certain tasks, such as administrative management, marketing or customer prospecting.
  2. Find a mentor or join a network of entrepreneurs for advice and support.
  3. Offer specialized services, which will allow you to stand out from the competition and attract clients willing to pay for your expertise.
  4. Invest in your continuing education to improve and stay current in your field.
  5. Avoid creating stress with unnecessary employees and expenses. It is essential to manage your resources well and not overload yourself with responsibilities that could affect your well-being and efficiency. Without employees and by working in an organized way, you will be able to maintain your freedom and take full advantage of your job.

Now the stereotype that a handyman job is an unstable job.

That's why it's completely wrong. A good “professional” Handyman knows how to move from one season to another by diversifying his services. Each season brings its share of work. Hence the importance of having a loyal and selected clientele to help them throughout the seasons and plan the work. A handyman with a good system has no off seasons.

In times of recession, I would much rather be a jack of all trades than a specialized technician at Bombardier. The technician is likely to lose his job, not me. There will always be work to do, often even more in a recession because people prefer to renovate than move. And as our homes become more and more complex, there will be an even greater need for our services, skills and tools to advise and guide them in the maintenance and security of their home.

The last prejudice, it is not a good job to create a profitable and prosperous business.

Again here, theory (which should be the norm) and practice don't always come together, in my… I mean in the case of our jack of all trades, he thought he was creating a nice company, apparently everything was going well: A large commercial condo, a receptionist, an accounting clerk, two territory managers, more than 15 handymen on the road and a turnover of more than 1 million per year. But in reality, he almost lost everything. That too could be the subject of a future article.

With hindsight and the experience gained, I realize how this job offers all the advantages to become profitable very quickly, if you know how to avoid my mistakes, keep a simple structure and recognize what pays off and what makes you believe that it is chargeable.

And here's what really pays off: working alone from home and building customer loyalty in your neighborhood.

First, expenses are very limited.

– No premises and related costs to pay.

– No specialized tools to acquire and finance.

– No employees to pay.

– No inventory to bear.

Then, the income is very interesting

– In direct relation to our talent, our hourly rate can easily exceed $80/h.

– A clientele that we can help several times a year and for several years.

– No customer account. Work completed = work paid.

– Customer requests are numerous and very sufficient.

The advantage of the job is that the handyman can bet on: The “Repeat Business”

Regardless of the type of business and especially among renovation businesses, one of the challenges is to constantly renew its client list week after week and year after year. The kitchen contractor can't redo his client's kitchen next month.

The good handyman knows how to retain his customers and knows how to help them throughout the years to come to maintain, repair, renovate and even clean the house and thus become indispensable in their eyes. All this allows him to develop recurring services and to have his clientele in his neighborhood.

Not letting you down, you have a genius idea: hire a handyman.

Installed in front of your computer, you type " handyman in a search engine and “BAM” they are all there… you are really too strong. But how can you be sure to choose "THE" good one who will be available, competent, punctual, at a reasonable price and offering a guarantee on his work?

Here are the 5 golden rules to follow when it comes time to choose your handyman.

Do they have references that you can (read “must”) check?

Anyone with a hammer in hand can come off as a jack of all trades. So, I suggest that you be very vigilant, because you must protect your biggest investment, your house or condo. Check to see if they can provide you with references from satisfied customers. How many years has he been in business? Does he have a website where you can see his business address and a phone number other than his cell phone? What are his latest accomplishments and does he have supporting photos?

Beware of too attractive a price

As you know, transportation costs, tools, insurance and permits add up. Moreover, expertise can be bought. So, if a handyman offers you a lower than average price, you should be on the lookout. Too often, I have seen jobs being abandoned by people hired who did not have the required skills, or because they had found a better paying opportunity with another client.
