10 Common Pitfalls or Problems to Avoid before installing your hardwood floor

Here is a list of the 10 most common problems encountered when installing hardwood floors, with solutions to help you ensure a professional and long-lasting result:

1. Unleveled floor

Problem : Uneven flooring can result in wobbly boards, gaps between boards, or creaking.

Solution : Check the level of your subfloor using a spirit or laser level. If necessary, apply a leveling compound or correct any raised areas by sanding them to a flat, even surface before beginning installation.

Problem : A dirty, damp, or poorly secured subfloor can cause adhesion problems or movement of the wood after installation.

Solution : Thoroughly clean the subfloor to remove dust and debris. Check that it is completely dry and nail or screw any loose boards. For floating floors, install a suitable underlay (vapour barrier or soundproofing).

Problem : Installing hardwood or floating wood without acclimating it can cause the boards to swell or shrink after installation.

Solution : Allow boards to acclimate to room temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours (or longer depending on manufacturer recommendations) before installing.

Problem : An improvised layout can result in unnecessary cuts or asymmetrical alignment of the boards.

Solution : Dry-lay out the boards before installing them to identify any necessary adjustments. Plan to start the installation with a straight row, aligned with the most visible wall.

Problem : Failure to allow expansion space around walls or obstructions may result in the floor lifting or swelling.

Solution : Leave an expansion gap of about 10 mm along walls, columns or other fixed obstacles. This gap can be hidden later with skirting boards or quarter rounds.

Problem : Using nails, glue or improper tools can compromise the installation and durability of the floor.

Solution : Use nails specific to hardwood floors or adhesives recommended for glued parquet floors. For floating floors, check that the underlayment is compatible with the type of flooring chosen.

Problem : Laying wood over a damp subfloor can cause mold, swelling or warping of the boards.

Solution : Test the subfloor for moisture using a hygrometer. If the moisture exceeds the recommendations (often 12% for wood), wait until it is completely dry or use a vapor barrier.

Problem : Poorly fitting cuts around doors, columns or conduits can affect the aesthetics and stability of the floor.

Solution : Take accurate measurements and use proper cutting tools. Allow for expansion spaces, even around obstacles.

Problem : Debris left on the floor during and after installation can scratch or damage the floor.

Solution : Clean the work area regularly with a vacuum cleaner or soft broom. After installation, apply a protective or maintenance product recommended for your type of wood.

Problem : Installing a floor in a room that is too cold, too humid or poorly ventilated can compromise its durability.

Solution : Lay the wood in a room where the temperature is stable (between 18 and 25 °C) and where the relative humidity is controlled (between 40% and 60%). Avoid drafts or direct exposure to sunlight during installation.
