10 Common Pitfalls or Problems to Avoid before installing your hardwood floor

Here is a list of the 10 most common problems encountered when installing hardwood floors, with solutions to help you ensure a professional and long-lasting result:

1. Unleveled floor

Problem : Uneven ground can lead to wobbly boards, gaps between boards, or creaking.

Solution : Check the level of your subfloor using a spirit level or laser. If necessary, apply a leveling compound or correct any raised areas by sanding them to obtain a flat and even surface before starting the installation.

Problem : A dirty, damp, or poorly fixed subfloor can cause adhesion problems or wood movement after installation.

Solution : Thoroughly clean the subfloor to remove dust and debris. Ensure it is completely dry and nail or screw any loose boards in place. For floating floors, install a suitable underlayment (vapor barrier or soundproofing).

Problem : Installing hardwood or floating wood without acclimating it can lead to swelling or shrinkage of the boards after installation.

Solution : Allow the boards to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours (or longer according to the manufacturer's recommendations) before installing them.

Problem : An improvised layout can lead to unnecessary cuts or asymmetrical alignment of the boards.

Solution : Dry-fit the planks before laying them to identify any necessary adjustments. Plan to begin laying them with a straight row, aligned with the most visible wall.

Problem : Not leaving expansion space around walls or obstacles can lead to floor lifting or swelling.

Solution : Leave an expansion gap of approximately 10 mm along walls, columns, or other fixed obstacles. This gap can later be concealed with baseboards or quarter-round molding.

Problem : Using unsuitable nails, glue, or tools can compromise the installation and durability of the flooring.

Solution : Use nails specifically designed for hardwood floors or adhesives recommended for glued-down parquet. For floating floors, ensure the underlayment is compatible with the chosen flooring type.

Problem : Laying wood on a damp subfloor can lead to mold, swelling, or warping of the boards.

Solution : Test the subfloor moisture level using a hygrometer. If the moisture exceeds the recommended level (often 12% for wood), wait until it is completely dry or use a vapor barrier.

Problem : Poorly fitted cuts around doors, columns or conduits can harm the aesthetics and stability of the floor.

Solution : Take precise measurements and use appropriate cutting tools. Allow for expansion gaps, even around obstacles.

Problem : Debris left on the floor during and after installation can scratch or damage the flooring.

Solution : Regularly clean the work area with a vacuum cleaner or a soft broom. After installation, apply a protective or maintenance product recommended for your type of wood.

Problem : Installing flooring in a room that is too cold, too humid, or poorly ventilated can compromise its durability.

Solution : Place the wood in a room where the temperature is stable (between 18 and 25°C) and the relative humidity is controlled (between 40% and 60%). Avoid drafts or direct sunlight during installation.
